Memory Verse

This year at VBS, the Bible verse the kids will memorize and learn about is John 8:12: Jesus spoke to them again: “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.” Why are we focusing on this verse? Culture claims to know about Jesus, but many people are in the dark about who He really is. Some might see Jesus as just a person from history or a good man or a good teacher - but He is more than that! This VBS theme will shine a light on the truth of who Jesus really is.

Tonight's VBS Bible Study: Jesus is God's Promised Son

Tonight, the kids studied Matthew 16:13-20 when Jesus asked His disciples who people said that He is. Many people believed Jesus was a prophet, and even John the Baptist, Elijah, or Jeremiah come back to life. Jesus asked who the disciples said that He is. Peter said Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of the living God. Jesus said Peter was blessed because God had revealed the truth to him about who Jesus is, and that Peter would share the good news about Jesus and start His church.

Continue the conversation with your kids:

• Who is Jesus? (Jesus is the Messiah, God's Promised Son)
• What is sin? (Anything we think, say or do that does not please God)
• Which disciple realized who Jesus really was? (Peter)
• Why do you think Jesus called Himself "the Light of the World?" (People need sunlight in order to be healthy. We need light to navigate through the dark. Just like a strong light guides us through the darkness, Jesus guides people to love, follow, and obey God)
• A question for parents: Do you know who Jesus truly is? If you don't, a great place to start is by reading the book of John in the Bible. You can also text us back and we'll help you get on the right track!

VBS Motto

Our VBS motto, which is recited each night, is Jesus is the light of the world! This builds on our memory verse about Jesus calling Himself the light of the world. Just like lighting a candle in a pitch-black room will eliminate darkness, Jesus Christ eliminates the sin that darkens our hearts and separates us from God.

Tonight's VBS Bible Study: Jesus is God's Perfect Son

Tonight, the kids learned how God sent John the Baptist to get people ready for Jesus. People heard John’s message and started to repent of their sin - they chose to turn away from sin and asked God for forgiveness. Then John baptized them, lowering them in the water and bringing them back up as a symbol of their faith and God’s forgiveness. Jesus went to see John the Baptist at the Jordan River and asked to be baptized. God’s voice came from heaven, declaring “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Continue the conversation with your kids:

• Who said this is my beloved Son? (God)
• Who was God talking about when He said, “This is My beloved Son?” (Jesus)
• Do you think you could live perfect lives without ever doing something you should not do? (no, none of use can ever be perfect)
• A question for parents: Do you think Jesus was just an ordinary man, or do you believe He truly is the perfect Son of God? (Jesus is the only perfect man who ever lived and was both God and man. The fact that Jesus lived a perfect life is the reason He could restore the relationship between God and people that was broken by sin. Jesus died to take the punishment we deserve for our sins. The Bible says that no one can live a perfect life except Jesus (Romans 3:23; Hebrews 4:15). Jesus was not ordinary. He was extraordinary!
  
  

Looking for a Church to Attend?

At Bogey Hills, we have a 10:45 family-friendly worship service on Sundays that we hope you'll come and visit! We also have a one-hour Bible study (we call it Sunday School) that starts at 9:30 for all ages. For kids, we have classrooms for babies through 5th graders. Tonight's VBS Bible Study: Jesus is the Powerful Son of God

There are millions of people around the world who would agree that Jesus was a good teacher. But he was SO much more than just a good teacher! Jesus proved He is powerful by performing many different miracles, which the kids learned about from Matthew 15 in the Bible. Crowds witnessed Jesus healing the sick and providing food for massive crowds with only a few fish and loaves of bread. He could only do this because He is God’s Son. To come to life after He was put to death on a cross proves His power over life and death. There is nothing that Jesus cannot do - He is more powerful than anything you can think of, and it’s all because He’s more than a teacher. He is God’s Son!

Continue the conversation with your kids:

• Because He is powerful, Jesus can do many things that no one else can do. What did Jesus do in today’s story that no one else can do? (He healed people and fed the crowd with very little food)
• When Jesus fed a huge crowd, He solved a problem no one else was able to solve. What are some ways we can trust Jesus when we don't know how a problem will be solved? (We can remind ourselves that Jesus knows our true needs and hears us when we call to Him. We can also look back on how He has taken care of us in the past and trust He will continue to be faithful)
• Have you ever seen God provide something you needed? (answers will vary based on your family’s experiences)
• A question for parents: If these miracles are true, what do they tell us about who Jesus is? (If these miracles are true, they suggest Jesus is far more than a wise teacher or moral example. They indicate that He has authority and power that belong to God alone. Miracles show not only that He can do extraordinary things, but that He cares deeply about people - the sick, the hungry, the hurting, and the overlooked.)
  
  

Bogey Hills Youth Group

VBS is all about the kids, but you might have kids older than 5th grade at home. Bogey Hills has a great youth group of middle and high schoolers who have fun together and most importantly, encourage each other in living like Jesus. They have a Sunday School class, hang out with one another outside of church, and serve at Bogey as often as possible. You’ll see many of these kids helping with VBS this week!

Tonight’s Bible Study: Jesus is the Proven Son of God

In tonight’s Bible study from Mark 14-16, the kids learned that the religious leaders did not like Jesus because of the things He was doing and teaching. Jesus taught that He was God’s Son, so they wanted to stop Him. Jesus was arrested, put on trial, and nailed to a cross. When Jesus died, a Roman army officer who had been watching Jesus said, “This man really was God’s Son!” After Jesus died, He was buried in a tomb. Some women went to the tomb. When they got there, they saw that the stone had been rolled away. They went in but did not find Jesus’ body. Instead, a man dressed in a white robe told them Jesus is Alive!

Continue the conversation with your kids:

• Who had a ‘light bulb moment’ in today’s Bible story? (a Roman army officer)
• What did the Roman officer realize as he saw Jesus die on the cross? (Jesus is truly God’s Son)
• You have been hearing about the ABCs of becoming a Christian. Do you remember what that means? (A = Admit to God that you have sin in your life. B = Believe that Jesus is the Son of God. C = Confess that He is the Savior [the one who died for your sin} and Lord [your “boss” who you will follow and obey])
• A question for parents: Do you believe that Jesus is the Proven Son of God? If not, we recommend you read the book The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel. He is a former investigative journalist who set out to disprove Christianity. The evidence he found, however, compelled him to believe that Jesus is truly the Son of God.

Powell Terrace Food Pantry

You know that our mission project during VBS week is supporting Powell Terrace Food Pantry. Thank you SO much for your generosity by sending your kids with financial donations and food items. Powell Terrace is located in St. Charles behind the Lindenwood Schnucks and Post Office. Through the support of the community and local businesses, we are able to feed over 2,500 people each month. What an incredible week! First of all, thank you so much for sharing your child(ren) with us the last few days. We have been so blessed by each of the kiddos who participated, so thank you for bringing them every day and talking at home about what Jesus is teaching them. Our team is praying over your family. Tonight’s Bible Study: Jesus is God’s Plan for Forgiveness

In Acts 2, the kids learned that Peter preached about Jesus. He and the other disciples stood up in front of a crowd and said God proved who Jesus was by doing miracles, wonders, and signs through Him. God sent His Son, Jesus, to earth to die and take the punishment for our sins. The people in the crowd that day were very sorry for their sins and asked what they should do. Peter told them to repent - to turn from disobeying God to obeying God - and be baptized in the name of Jesus for the forgiveness of their sins. That day 3,000 people responded to Peter’s message, repented, and were baptized.

Continue the conversation with your kids:

• Who is Jesus? (He is Lord and Messiah)
• What did Peter tell the people they could do to respond to Jesus? (turn from sin and turn to God; be baptized to show they had received God’s forgiveness)
• What does forgiveness mean? (is to refuse to punish someone who has hurt you or sinned against you)
• A question for parents: What does it mean to be forgiven by God? Do you know if you are forgiven? (Everyone who hears the good news about Jesus will respond in some way, but how people respond to Him is important because Jesus is the only way to receive God’s forgiveness for our sin. Forgiveness is to refuse to punish someone who has hurt you or sinned against you. When God forgives people, He also chooses not to remember their sin. To receive God’s forgiveness, a person must ask God to forgive them and must repent or turn away from his or her sin. Repent doesn’t just mean turning from doing bad things to doing good things. It means turning from sin and even from your own good works and turning to Jesus, trusting only in Him to save you.
